A Guide to Local Food in the Catskills

  |  July 9, 2012

A recent trip to the western border of Sullivan County reinforced something we already knew: it can be very hard to get good groceries, especially good, local produce, in the western Catskills, even if some of it is growing within miles of the grocery store. We’ve stopped by many a Peck’s Market, and appreciated the diversity of products (from La Choy to Manishewitz), but the lettuce looked sad and was wrapped in plastic. The Sullivan County Farmers’ Markets are wonderful, and major destinations, but they’re only a few hours a week on one day.

So, this guide from Pure Catskills should help folks fill in the rest of the week. It lists farms, farmstands, markets and gardens — and includes lots of photos of hip farmer types, if the produce alone doesn’t entice you. Cheese? Maple syrup? Apples? Alpacas? It’s all there. We’re planning on spending much of the summer visiting places listed in the guide.
