Accommodating Your Dutchess County Dining Adventure

  |  January 19, 2015

We were in the middle of making our reservations for the CIA’s new pop-up Pangea when it occurred to us that a visit to the east side of the Hudson River would not be complete without some quality time with Sprout Creek Farm’s award-winning cheese, and this is where our plans began to snowball. Since cheese and wine pair so beautifully with a chilly winter evening, we went ahead and added Rhinecliff’s very own mulled wine-maker to the itinerary, and if we can’t figure out how to pronounce “glögg” in time, there’s always Tousey Winery just north of the Rhinecliff train station…

At this point (unless we can find a truly heroic designated driver), we’re thinking a full weekend in Dutchess County might be on the menu, and any of these lovely rental locations would be the perfect cherry on top of this appetizing weekend!

1) Hyde Park Guest House

Price/night: $100
Accommodations: Private room, 1 bed
Max guests: 2
Min stay: 1 night

There are two separate rooms available at this quaint Poughkeepsie guest house – the “Green Oak Room” and “Red Oak Room.” Both were renovated recently and both include Wifi, so you can update your food blog immediately after a day spent touring the nearby restaurants and cafes. The home’s location just ten minutes from the Poughkeepsie train station is a big plus in our book, and the previous guests would agree that a train ride up the river to visit Dot and Paul’s charming abode would be well worth it!

Sample reviews:

“The Greener Oak Guest House is a treasure … you probably won’t find the likes of it easily. The room was extremely comfortable, with a cozy sitting room, equipped with a very modern TV, radio, and a variety of interesting reading material. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it for anyone planning a trip to Hyde Park or the Hudson River Valley.”

“The pictures do not do justice to the guest house – which is huge and beautifully decorated. We felt like in a five star hotel! We were the only guests so we didn’t have to share the bathroom. The neighbour is really quiet and leafy. Next door to FDR museum – which is well worth a visit. Coffee was delicious. We went to the Copola for diner as Dot suggested and we were not disappointed! We highly recommend staying at the Greener Oak.”

2) Quaint Hyde Park Cabin

Min stay: 1 night

We can safely assume that a weekend at this Hyde Park cabin will take care of anyone’s need for some peace and quiet. Sitting on 27 acres of sprawling countryside, Anne Marie’s rental is nothing short of rural magic. The warm interior is rustic and clean, and the invitation to this getaway is not limited to humans – there is paddock located on the property, and guests are welcome to bring their horses to share in the Dutchess County R&R.

Sample reviews:

“This cabin couldn’t have been more perfect! It is exactly what it looks like in the listing but even better – the land it sits on is sprawling and beautiful, with enough room to explore yet in an area with some houses around to feel safe. The interior is quaint and perfectly decorated : great kitchen, dining table, and living room that is made to socialize with friends. A group of 6 girls went out to take a break from the city life and it couldn’t have been easier to get there- we took a train up and rented a car which was a 15 minute drive from the station. Genna and Ann Marie were amazing hosts and responded in a matter of minutes to any questions we had. The cabin was perfectly stocked with necessities that we couldn’t have provided: spices, olive oil, dishes, and cooking utensils so making dinner for the group was simple. The outside area was great to sit around and enjoy the beautiful view.

Really can’t emphasize how great this place was! We’re already planning a trip back in the spring!”

“A great getaway from NYC! The cabin was very picturesque and cozy! Ann Marie was a great host too. She always got back to me right away whenever I had a question about the cabin. Would definitely recommend to friends!”

Price/night: $300
Accommodations: Full house, 3 bedrooms
Max guests: 6
Min stay: 2 nights

Hop off the Taconic Parkway and settle down in this charming creekside country house. The rich interior of Roxana’s rental shines with glossy cherry flooring and tons of sunlight. The back deck is just waiting for the ice to thaw and a group of picnickers to share a meal at the large table overlooking the creek. Looking at the supply of reading material and the spacious kitchen, we’re not sure if we would actually make it outside! Guests that do manage to venture outdoors are encouraged to visit Bard College and the Rhinebeck Performing Arts Center.

Sample reviews:

“Our weekend getaway was perfect – the house is charming, comfy and cozy, full of comfortable spots to curl up and read, knit or do nothing. The deck overlooking the woods and stream is lovely and relaxing. We especially appreciated the booklet put together by the owner, giving instructions for where to buy groceries, etc that helped us get settled right away. The booklet also suggested hikes which were awesome and great local restaurants. A lovely spot – we look forward to retuning!”

“Family went for few days – we very much enjoyed the stay. The house was very nicely appointed and the spacious deck was great. Roxana was a pleasure to deal with; she has such a great book collection – great for perusing. Very clean house. Peaceful setting.”
