Woodstock usually gets all the love and attention, but if you head down the road a piece, you’ll find a mini oasis of food, music, culture, and nature in the form of Bearsville, a hamlet in the town of Woodstock just outside of the village (walking distance, almost). Bearsville is the home of one of the area’s premiere music venues, the Bearsville Theater, not to mention some excellent eating at the Bear Cafe, the Little Bear, and the Gypsy Wolf Cantina, plus specialty gourmet groceries and baked goods at the Cub Market and Sunfrost. Bearsville is also where WDST lives, arguably the most popular rock music radio station in the mid-Hudson Valley. Since it’s a small neighborhood, Bearsville’s real estate stock is equally small, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some lookers on the market. Furthermore, Bearsville is located 15 minutes from Mount Tremper and 20 minutes from Phoenicia. Cooper Lake, which has been in the news quite a lot these days due to the proposed Niagara water bottling plant that would draw from the lake, is situated in Bearsville.

Next time you’re out and about in the Woodstock area, head due west on Tinker Street (otherwise known as Route 212) past Upstate Films until you come to the Saw Kill. But don’t blink or else you’ll probably miss it. Bearsville is in Ulster County approximately 2 hours from NYC.
