Commutable, Car-Free Country House: Garrison Farmhouse, $569,000

  |  November 13, 2012

Some requests came in this week for commutable places — past the ‘burbs and officially upstate, but with easy access to work in New York City. So we honed in on Garrison. Yes, it’s easy to drop seven figures in this tony, leafy town, but there are few lovely spots within skipping distance of the train and with the pricetag of a brownstone Brooklyn one-bedroom.

Take 101 Manitou Station Road. Yes, it’s very close to Manitou Station, which is one hour and 16 minutes via MetroNorth — a long commute but not impossible. The farmhouse, originally built in 1920, has plenty of updates in its 1,790 square feet. Three beds, one-and-a-half baths, stone fireplaces, views, porch, a studio and even a koi pond. Seems worth trading city life for.

We think the kitchen could use a little love, but we’re partial to the 50s mint green of the living room.
