Car-Free Country House: Margaretville Colonial, $169,000

  |  March 21, 2012

We’re going cheap with our Car-Free selection this week, because this Margaretville Colonial seems to, by Internet appearances, have a lot to recommend it.

But first, allow us to explain right up front that it IS about 6 miles from the Trailways bus station on Route 28 in Margaretville. But sometimes a Car-Free house is more than where the most convenient public transportation stops. Sometimes it’s an amalgam of things, like proximity to a grocery store, a local restaurant, a wine store, even the post office (do people still use those?). So although 6 miles might seem like a lot, it’s about a 30 minute bike ride. See? Not so painful.

It’s not a huge house at 1300 square feet, but it seems neatly-kept, and there’s a deck out back overlooking a trout steam and steps that lead right to it. Three bedrooms, 2 baths, hardwood floors, and a wood stove in the living room.

The house is located right on Halcottsville Road. And we mean, the front door of the house opens onto Halcottsville Road, which could be a problem as far as dust and traffic is concerned. But Wawaka Lake is right in the backyard, and there’s even a place to rent a kayak or canoe just a few steps away. Best of all, there’s a farmer’s market every Saturday at the Pakatakan Farmers Market about a mile down Halcottsville Road.
