Cheating on Upstate New York
Upstater | June 3, 2013Here’s a dilemma for those of us who aren’t fortunate enough to live full time in upstate New York, but have either bought or rented properties there: how to handle weekends, especially in summer, when you’re scheduled to go elsewhere. Much as we may love the mountains and the rolling hills, there may be trips to the beach planned, or voyages to see family members in other parts of the globe. Weekenders have reported that they occasionally feel burdened by their investment: they feel they must travel upstate every weekend, no matter what else is on the list of possibilities or priorities.
Admittedly, not everyone feels this way. For most weekenders, there’s a visceral need to escape to the country — not doing so is akin to missing a meditation session, or going back on gluten after a span of wheat-freeness: you just don’t feel right. Those who do grapple with this sometimes make themselves feel better by renting their places out for the weekend (if they own them), or allowing pals to come up in their places in their stead (if they rent).
How do the rest of you weekenders handle it when you have to cheat on your upstate New York house?
