Columbia County NY Hydro Electric Plant

This week on Upstater, we’re exploring energy-efficient homes of the Hudson Valley and Catskills, and we’d be hard pressed to think of anything more energy-efficient than owning your own Columbia County NY hydro electric plant to power both your home and the entire town.

Yes, you read that right. This property listed for $299K (seems reasonable for power plant…we guess?) is situated on Kinderhook Creek in Valatie village, right in the center of town. Touted in the listing as “income producing,” this property seems anachronistic, but hydro electric power is clean, reliable, and renewable…until there’s a drought, that is.

Our experience here at Upstater with hydro electric power plants is slim to nil, so we suspect whomever is interested in this property is specifically searching for a hydro electric plant to purchase. Meanwhile, for the rest of us rubberneckers, we’ll read more about small hydro on Wikipedia and marvel at this cool property from an historic point of view. This part of the Kinderhook Creek has been home to mills throughout the mid-1600, from grain to lumber to textiles. The plant was built in the 1990s, but water power helped Valatie to flourish during the Industrial Revolution. What lies in store for it now? The creation of a local power authority with you at the helm?

4001 Chatham Street, Valatie (Gilcrest Properties)
