Not much makes our ears perk up like the word “free”, especially when the free thing in question is a cool event at a well-known museum. This Saturday, July 12th is Community Free Day at the Dia:Beacon, where residents of Dutchess, Columbia, Ulster, Sullivan, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties can visit the art museum in Beacon free of charge. Community Free Day at the Dia will feature a children’s program from 11am to 12:30pm entitled Building Language: Considering Carl Andre’s Poetry and the Typewriter. Participants age 7-12 will have the opportunity to learn about the poetry of Carl Andre, tour his collection at the gallery, and create works on typewriters that will be compiled into a ‘zine, all led by educators from harlequin creature. Space is limited, so reserve a spot. This could be an event worth checking out if you’ve got kids who love to make cool stuff. Other happenings at Community Free Day include a gallery tour, a talk by mathematician Philip Ording on Carl Andre’s work, and another Building Language workshop, this time for teens age 13 and up.
