RockAcademy

Greetings Upstater friends and fans! This weekend is literally a feast for the senses in the Hudson Valley. So many great things happening and I’m personally going to squeeze in them all.

First, a little head banging is good for the soul! Friday and Saturday nights at Utopia Soundstage in Bearsville, the uber-talented kids from The Paul Green Rock Academy present “A Tribute to Black Sabbath.” Showtime is 7 p.m., tickets are $10. You all know Paul Green—founder of the nationally acclaimed School of Rock, which inspired the film of the same name starring Jack Black (playing Paul!). After selling his 150+ chain of schools, Paul moved to the Hudson Valley and began his newest endeavor, Rock Academy. These kids KICK ASS and the Sabbath show is going to be fantastic. Kugel

From metal to matzoh balls… on Saturday, from 3 to 5 p.m., at The Center For Photography in Woodstock and in conjunction The Golden Notebook (the best indie bookstore in the world), authors of the sensational holiday best-seller Eating Delancey will be on hand for a reading, signing and photo exhibition. Eating Delancey is a pictorial celebration of the classic, beloved Jewish foods and haunts of NYC’s Lower East Side and this event is a MUST for those who love to fress (that’s “eat heartily” in Yiddish)! The introduction to the book was penned by the late, great Joan Rivers—one of the last pieces of devilish writing from the comedienne—and features musings and recipes from Lou Reed to Don Rickles. The book is illustrated with foodie glamour shots by co-author Aaron Rezny, original works of which will be available for sale at the signing. Expect local contributors like Woodstock ’69 Festival’s Michael Lang to be on hand, to tell the story of how the world-changing concert almost didn’t happen and how a plate of pickled herring saved the day. SweetBryar

Don’t miss the opening of a new show of paintings by local lovely luminary, the artist known as Sweetbryar, at the just renovated and super yummy Love Bites at 69 Partition Street in Saugerties on Sunday, from 5 to 7 p.m. The themes Bryar has explored in the past—myths, legends and faerie tales—have been extended and her latest series, Holy Inappropriate Women, will all be on display in an almost complete retrospective of her large canvases. This is her world narrative, full of mysterious opulent scenes rich in detail and clever commentary, presented with skill and emotion. HOT DAMN! If you miss the opening reception on Sunday, the show will run through the spring.

LuckyMee

One more? Noted South Asian chef extraordinaire Michael Pardus debuts his first pop-up ramen noodle shop, Lucky Mee Noodles, on Sunday, December 7, from 5 p.m. until the last bit of broth is slurped. Lucky Mee Noodles is a concept that Pardus has been crafting since living in Vietnam and he’ll be offering six variations on $10 bowls of chewy noodles, rich broths made from scratch and fresh herbs and spices—featuring the flavors of Vietnam, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. This first pop-up shop will be housed at Elephant Food & Wine in Kingston at 310 Wall Street. A second night of noodles will take place on Monday, December 8th, at New Paltz’s Café Teria, again at 5 p.m. Come hungry!
