The Relocators: Good-bye to Brooklyn

Today is moving day for Kary and Mark. The movers will get us to Beacon in two stages. Today they move everything out of our Brooklyn apartment in Fort Greene and Wednesday they will bring it up to Beacon.

I (Kary) have lived in Brooklyn, off and on, for over 10 years. The neighborhoods I have lived in were Cobble Hill, Windsor Terrace/South Slope and Fort Greene. I have worked in Carroll Gardens and Downtown Brooklyn. Mark has lived in Fort Greene for about two and half years and worked from home most of that time.

We are very happy to be starting our new adventure in Beacon and Upstate NY. For the next year and a half, we will be exploring Beacon and other parts of Upstate NY and the Hudson Valley to discover where we’d like to buy a home and put down permanent roots.

But before we begin the next phase of our lives, I’d like to say “Goodbye” to Brooklyn and point out some things we will miss.

The biggest thing I think we’ll both miss is the architecture and energy that is unique to living in “Brownstone Brooklyn.” We love walking down the streets and looking at all the details of these beautiful old buildings. We love living only a block or so from Fort Greene Park. No, its not Prospect Park. But it’s also not as crowded and is much easier to walk around with two small dogs with small legs. 🙂 We will miss going there every day on our walks.

We will miss being able to walk up to the store and buy pretty much anything we want, at any hour of the day or night. We’ll miss having a Trader Joe’s nearby, and we’ll miss some of the restaurants. Mark is already going into withdrawals at the thought of losing his fish and chips joint, so we ate one last meal at The Chip Shop Saturday night. We’ll also miss the goat cheese salads at 67 Burgers (and their ranch turkey burgers with crispy fried onions and swiss cheese…not to mention the sweet potato fries.) We’ll miss the Smoke Joint’s grilled corn and macaroni and cheese, and Deniz’s fresh bread with hummus.

We will miss not having to drive most everywhere we go because taking public transportation is so easy in Brooklyn. I will miss being able to jump on my bike and ride to work in less than 15 minutes flat.

We will miss the idea of being New Yorkers; there is something sexy about being able to say that. Even though we haven’t taken as much advantage of all that entails lately…we like the idea of being able to take in a Broadway Show and eat at a great restaurant that is only a subway ride away.

Yes…we will miss Brooklyn. But we’re ready for our next adventure. So look out Beacon…here we come. Yay!
