History and Hauntings at the Peach Grove Inn in Warwick, $1,100,000
Sam Benedict | January 5, 2016Warwick is one of those towns that is packed with history and full of charm. It would be difficult not to appreciate the centuries of stories that fill each home, store, and restaurant in this old village. The Peach Grove Inn has some history of its own. Built in 1850 by Colonel William F. Wheeler, this Greek Revival is the real deal. It is said to be one of the first homes in the Hudson Valley to have electricity and running water. In 1850, the Orange County Fair awarded Colonel Wheeler first prize for his stunning home.
Whether you’re a history buff or not, the beauty of this building alone will make you want to buy what is now the established Peach Grove Inn. The majestic stairs lead you past the columns and through the front door into a hand-painted marble hallway. Look down at the wide plank hardwood floors or up at the elegant 11-foot ceilings. The Peach Grove Inn has 6 period style guest rooms and 6 bathrooms for each, some even containing original fireplaces.
This fully functioning inn is ready to go. Some highlights include a beautiful kitchen with double ovens, a colossal mahogany table fit for royalty, seating up to 14 and and a back veranda with views onto the secluded 1 acre it sits on. The building has central air throughout and private owner’s quarters with a separate entrance, bathroom and laundry facilities.
If the elegance of this building and its rich history hasn’t inspired you to become an inn owner, maybe some folklore will. I don’t know about you but we love a good ghost story here at Upstater. Many guests have reported waking up to an apparition of an old man and a dog standing in their room. Others have seen a woman standing in the window but when they check the room, she has mysteriously vanished. Linda Zimmermann, a local ghost writer came to investigate the claims, scanning the inn for temperature changes. Her EMF (electromagnetic field) readings fluctuated greatly from 0.1, a normal reading, to 2.1, a paranormal one. After Zimmermann felt a tickle on her neck, she was sure that paranormal activity exists at the Peach Grove Inn. Maybe Colonel Wheeler still roams the halls of his beloved home. Don’t worry! He’s friendly.
