House Crush(es) of the Week: The Elka Park Beauties
Kandy Harris | July 17, 2015We couldn’t choose which one we liked better, so we’re doubling up on the house crushes this week with two selections from Elka Park, a gated community near Hunter Mountain in Greene County. To say we appreciate the old-fashioned palatial seasonal “cottages” and second homes that make up the community is a bit of an understatement. We’re fascinated by them, charmed by their anachronistic size, craftsmanship, and the luxuriant surroundings that serve as their backdrop.
The first is this painted lady Victorian on nearly 20 acres nestled in the Catskills. Every wish you could stare at the mountains while floating in your in-ground pool? Well, it’s your lucky day. The interior is wild and opulent with wood inlay floors. Includes 2 guest cottages (listing says “soon to be renovated.” Does that mean by the owners or by you when you buy it?). Listing Price: $1.495 million. 2016 Platte Clove Road, Elka Park (Lawrence O’Toole) GMAP.

This Victorian in Elka Park is like the first Victorian’s slightly Goth older cousin. Darker both inside and out, the house looks like a time capsule seemingly not that much changed from its turn-of-the-century origins, aside from the appearance of a TV, chair, or light fixture here and there. Each of the 9 bedrooms has its own sink, which gives it the feel of an inn with private rooms as opposed to a private residence. Tons of knotty wood and high ceilings in this huge 6000 sq. ft. Elka Park abode. Comes with 4.5 acres of land. Listing Price: $449,000. 177 Francis Road, Elka Park (Win Morrison) GMAP.
