Last Shot to Shake the Leaves: Matt Pond PA TONIGHT at BSP Kingston

It’s true that nothing lasts forever, that the only constant is change. And perhaps the ease with which we move through the change can be the only real measurement of success in this life. Earlier this year, prolific indie rockers Matt Pond PA released The State of Gold, their tenth full-length album in as many years. They followed its release with the announcement that it — and the supporting U.S. tour — would be their last… which brings us to why we’re here. If you’re in the Kingston area, or can get here quickly, tonight may well be your last chance to see the band perform live in its current incarnation.

Let’s be clear: This is your last shot to shake the leaves. And if that weren’t reason enough to get yourselves to BSP tonight, openers Completions (solo project of Matt Pond PA’s cellist Shawn Alpay) and Laura Stevenson are the nails in the not-to-be-missed coffin. The three bands have been playing a string of shows across the country together for the last six weeks, sharing more than just the stage: Alpay opens the night on his own, then joins Pond’s lineup after Laura Stevenson’s set, along with mainstay guitarist Chris Hansen and Stevenson’s bassist and drummer, Mike Campbell and Michael Wilcock, respectively.

But the rest of the world’s loss may be the Hudson Valley’s gain: Pond and Hansen, both permanent residents of the area, promise to keep writing and producing music — on their own terms. As we anxiously await what’s next, perhaps we’ll be able to convince Pond to continue touting his love for the place he now calls home on these very pages.

Tickets for tonight’s BSP Kingston show are on sale now, online and locally (cash only, no fees) at outdated: an antique café, Rocket Number Nine, Jack’s Rhythms, Darkside Records & Gallery, and Woodstock Music Shop. $15 in advance / $18 at the door, show starts at 8 p.m.
