Local Farm Grows Community and Vegetables through the Seasons

  |  February 10, 2017

Great Song Farm is hosting various community events this year, which are free and open to the public. The first event of the year is an all ages Free Farm Tour & Dinner this Sunday, February 12th from 4:30-7pm. The tour begins at 4:30 and attendees will be invited to check out the greenhouses, help feed the cows, greet the chickens and hunt for eggs, and find out about Great Song Farm’s CSA Veggie Shares. The free community dinner that follows invites attendees in for a delicious free organic/biodynamic vegetarian meal. RSVP details are below.

This event is just one of many opportunities for community engagement at Great Song Farm this year. Great Song will host monthly tours and dinners and is pleased to announce a farm-themed sing-along for the whole family; a hands-on ‘Cooking Veggies Your Kids Will Love’ cooking workshop; a spring-planting event for children; live music, other performances and events in the coming months. Great Song’s largest event of the season takes place over memorial day weekend and drew triple digit crowds for puppet shows and live music alongside their signature farm tours and farm fresh dinners for the past two years.

Great Song Farm, which runs a 100 member vegetable CSA June to November and a smaller Fall and Winter CSA November to March, is an established organic and biodynamic (non-gmo) farm providing fresh, delicious, healthy, clean produce to their neighbors through CSA Veggie Shares. Great Song grows over 40 types of vegetables and herbs, and over 200 varieties. Anthony Mecca, Sarah Hearn, and Betti and Larry Steel are the farmers and caretakers of the land. Members come to the farm to pick-up weekly shares from Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Tivoli, Germantown, Clinton, Clinton Corners, Pine Plains, and other surrounding communities in the Hudson Valley. Besides providing great veggies and family-friendly community events, their members value that they strive to foster healthy relationships between soil, water, and the greater ecosystem.

In an effort to help community members access their vegetable shares with ease, Great Song Farm accepts SNAP benefits, provides a payment plan option, and collects donations towards their Share the Harvest fund to support those in need of additional financial assistance. For on-site pick-ups, Great Song offers different size and frequency shares and allows members to make up pick-ups they may miss while on vacation. This year, Great Song is also introducing a fee-based delivery service to members in Red Hook and Rhinebeck for busy folks who love veggies but have a hard time getting out to the farm consistently. Delivery is available to SNAP benefit members in Red Hook and Rhinebeck free of charge.
