Luxury on the Cheap: It’s Affordable Mansions Week
Kandy Harris | May 4, 2015All credit for this week’s theme goes to our friend and contributor Haynes Llewellyn, who recently wrote a piece about the Kingston real estate buzz. One of the buzz-worthy aspects of Kingston’s real estate market is, as Haynes wrote, the existence of affordable mansions in the booming Ulster County city. And he is not wrong. Kingston is a great place to find luxury on the cheap (if you can afford the property taxes, which are hair-raising at times), but it’s not the only place. Sullivan, Greene, Delaware, and a handful of spots in Ulster County offer some stately manors at rock-bottom prices, so this week, we’ll be featuring a cadre of fancy finds, some ornate, others more demure in their appearance. By the way, in case you’re a stickler for semantics, Merriam-Webster defines the word mansion as “a large and impressive house.” That leaves plenty of room for interpretation, since a 2000 square foot house sounds large and impressive to me after spending the past decade living in an 850 square foot second-floor apartment. However, for the purposes of this week’s offerings, we’ll be showing you properties more north of the 2000 square foot mark. Regardless, no matter how you define mansion in your mind, we know one when we see it. Stay tuned…
