Plan it now to coincide with the peak of fall colors in late October, because this particular area of Ulster County is straight-up stunning when the gold, crimson, and orange hues hit Mohonk Mountain and Minnewaska Preserve. So, too, does Rosendale shine from the view atop the railroad trestle-turned-walking path, not to mention the Esopus Creek below. And, fall means harvest time, and this part of Ulster County is known for farm stands. Finally, there’s wine. Lots and lots of wine. Beer and spirits, too. Speaking of New Paltz village, this one-bedroom apartment is right in the middle of it and inexpensive, to boot, at around $100/night, give or take a few bucks depending on whether you’re booking during the week or the weekend. Don’t expect a ton of frills, but do expect to step out the door and find yourself elbow to elbow with great restaurants, shops, pubs, and the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. No need to drive anywhere. Take the Trailways or cab/Uber/Lyft it from the Poughkeepsie train station and walk everywhere else. 2-night min. stay.
