Hutton Brickyard, Kingston

Exciting things are happening at the old Hutton Brickyard in Kingston. Well, more accurately, exciting things will be happening once June rolls around. According to a recent story in the Daily Freeman, the dilapidated industrial site will be the setting of Smorgasburg, a food festival featuring a bountiful collection of local vendors. Smorgasburg started out life as a Brooklyn-based food festival from the creators of outdoor market Brooklyn Flea, Jonathan Butler and Eric Demby. Why Kingston? Butler breaks it down in the article: “There’s a renaissance occurring in the creative economy in the Hudson Valley that we are looking forward to being a part of. We think Kingston, with its central location, storied history, beautiful riverfront environment and vibrant community, is the perfect place to pitch our tent — or, in this case, tents.”

The brickyard’s fate, up until recently, was to become the Sailor’s Cove housing development, but we like the idea of an open-air food festival in a disused industrial site (one that we may or may not have spent a lot of time exploring), and we can’t wait to check out Smorgasburg during June and October. This, combined with perennial favorite Kingston Farmers Market (and Night Market, too!), is sure to make Kingston the place to be all summer long. As if it wasn’t already.
