This Vintage Sears Kit Home in Red Hook has a Hidden Surprise…

  |  June 4, 2018

Here’s a slice of housing Americana: A 1920s Red Hook Sears kit home with over 2,700 square feet…

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know that we love these Sears kit houses. Not only are they well-made and timeless, there’s also something very admirable about the concept of ordering your home from a catalogue and putting it together yourself. Frankly, to us, that sounds like our worst Ikea Malm nightmare, but it’s fun to look at them.

This three-bedroom Sears kit home in Red Hook village, northern Dutchess County, looks similar to the Sears Fullerton model, available in the late 1920s. The porch, however, lacks the Fullerton flared columns on the front porch, which may have been replaced with the Greek Revival columns currently there.

The living room features hard wood floors, wood-paneled staircase, and double French doors that open into the formal dining room.

Dining room is adjacent to the large kitchen with tons of storage space, breakfast area, natural light, and more wood floors. Up the Craftsman-quality stairs are the three large bedrooms. According to the listing, the house is in good condition but mentions the need for some TLC.

Now. Are you ready for the surprise that comes with this house? Close your eyes, count to 3, and open them…

TA-DA! It’s a detached studio/guest cottage with wood stove and kitchen.

Located in the village of Red Hook, walking distance to shops, restaurants, and other local amenities. Rhinebeck village is about 10 minutes away, the Rhinecliff Amtrak station is 15 minutes, and the Poughkeepsie Metro North station is about a half-hour’s drive.
