Town of the Week: Fleischmanns
Kandy Harris | March 11, 2013The village of Fleischmanns, located in the Delaware County town of Middletown just west of Big Indian and east of Margaretville, has been one of our go-to spots for car-free country houses for quite some time. With a Trailways bus station situated right in the center of town and enough essentials within walking distance, you could conceivably make Fleischmanns your country weekend get-away without ever having to get behind the wheel of car…as long as you’re looking for a true Catskills mountain get-away surrounded by nature.
Like so many other towns around, Fleischmanns was once Vacationland during the early 20th century, resplendent with country inns and bucolic scenery accessible via the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. But once automobile travel came into vogue, Fleischmanns’ popularity waned. To make matters worse, fires and tear-downs in the 1960s wiped out many of the village’s historic houses and original inns. Things are looking up for Fleischmanns these days, however. Thanks in part to some essential water-related infrastructure upgrades, the village is slowly coming back to life.
Today, there are plenty of businesses thriving in Fleischmanns, including galleries, antique shops, B&Bs, furniture stores, a supermarket, and even a publishing company. You can also train in martial arts with Shaolin monks at the USA Shaolin Temple in Fleischmanns. Given its location right on the Bush Kill, the village was one of the communities hit hard by Irene. It’s certainly looking good now, and the real estate market is more lively than we’ve seen it in quite a while. We’re sure that the village’s proximity to Belleayre Mountain is helping a bit. Prices are decent in Fleischmanns, and there are some nice looking plots of land available, too.
Fleischmanns is located just a little over two hours’ drive from NYC and about 20 minutes from Phoenicia in Ulster County.
