Upstater Destinations: Monticello Parks + Bethel Woods Museum

Bethel Woods Museum

While it seems like the obvious Sullivan County/Monticello area destination to write about this week would be the Monticello Casino and Raceway, but devoting an entry to that seems like a cop-out. There are other things to do in Sullivan County aside from dropping your silver into one-armed bandits and watching horses run around in circles.

For example, there are a number of parks, lakes, and places to play outside in the Monticello area and in Sullivan County. There’s Lake Superior Park and Beach, DeHoyos Park right in the village (Google Image the park; there are some really lovely pictures online). And if you still want to see animals (not the kind pulling carts around a racetrack), there’s the Breezeway Farm Petting Zoo.

Or, you can head west about 10 miles and hit the Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center Museum, which we’ve mentioned recently and briefly here on Upstater. The Center is a well-known venue in these parts, and we all know that Bethel was the site of the original Woodstock Music Festival. But the Center museum is also pretty groovy (sorry; couldn’t resist), and offers a comprehensive history of not only the mystique of the legendary festival, but of the 1960s itself.

So if you’re in the Monticello/Bethel/Sullivan County area looking for something to do, make sure to check out a few of these places and save your quarters for the laundromat.
