Upstater Destinations: Pumpkin Picking at Greig Farm

  |  October 11, 2012

Upstater offspring love to pick pumpkins at Greig’s Farm, Red Hook.

Sure, you can go to the local grocery store and get a pumpkin. They’re right outside in the giant box. But for us here at Upstater, picking out the Halloween pumpkins is more than just grabbing a couple and standing in the check-out line. It’s an event, a family affair involving bundling up, getting something hot to drink, and wandering around the pumpkin patch, trying to find the most attractive, biggest, or weirdest looking pumpkins we can find. There are lots of places to do that in the Upstater area, but one of our favorites is Greig Farm in Red Hook (Dutchess County).

Greig’s offers the usual October picking options that all You-Pick farms do, apples and pumpkins. But what we love about Greig’s is that Gigi’s Market is right next door, and they have amazing soups, sandwiches, and something called a “skizza”, which is a pizza with a crunchy thin crust covered in a variety of ingredients, like goat cheese and pears, or mozz and and tomato. There’s also a florist (Grandiflora), a koi pond, and a bunch of adorable, friendly goats who love to get pats on the head. It’s like one-stop shopping for a fall family outing.

Grab your family and make a day of it. Oh, and speaking of Halloween fun, Grims Mortuary is nearby. Spooky Halloween fun awaits!
