What’s the Best Upstate Town for Retirees?

Let’s say you’ve got some family in Dutchess County and some family in Kings County, and you want to encourage the grandparents to relocate somewhere with fairly easy access to both. And let’s say these grandparents are used to living in a small-ish college town which has everything they want (except for their grandchildren): it’s walkable, has public transit, lots of culture, good food and good produce, beautiful nature, and a political sensibility that suits them (which, in this particular case, is left of center). Where would you have them move?

The obvious choice is New Paltz, though some of us here have found the downtown to be a bit too clad in tie-dye and too crawling with intoxicated college kids, but we have heard from many residents that stepping just outside of that scene gives you a glimpse into a lovely world, sans drunken hippiness. So, yeah, it’s a contender. But surely there are other choices, someplace from Columbia County all the way to Sullivan? Any suggestions?
