Yellow Farmhouse on Lake Road in Jewett for $239,000

  |  September 6, 2011

This salt-boxy yellow farmhouse on Colgate Road is really nicely situated. It’s about a ten minute walk or so from Colgate Lake and even though it’s on a small plot of land and close to the road, the property has a fairly private feel. No neighbors to one side, thanks to a bridge and a creek, and a hill toward the back. It’s just sort of nestled there, looking all sunshine-y and asbestos-sided, with a treehouse in the yard and behind that, a gurgling stream.

The inside is similarly cheery, not too country kitsch but not antiseptic either. The Jewett location is close enough to Hunter and Windham to have ski rental potential, though you won’t get central Windham or Hunter prices. Note that Colgate Lake is lovely, but nothing fancy. There isn’t a “beach” per se, or life guards if you worry about that, and it’s lake-y enough that you’d probably want to invest in water shoes if this becomes your spot (think mud, seaweed, etc), but it is real country and free to boot.

Colgate Road was hit by Hurricane Irene, and the road is a little torn-up, but compared to damage in other parts of Greene County, it’s pretty minor and should probably look good-as-new by spring, if not by ski season. This house has only been on the market for about a month, and we’re still waiting to see how Irene will affect fall real estate traffic. Note, too, that this one is being offered by Gene Gordon realty, but it isn’t listed on their website.
