100 Miles NW: Dinner at The Heron

  |  August 9, 2013

Folks, a new treat for you. There’s a great blog about the joys of Sullivan County called One Hundred Miles NW by local resident Gabby Scott Ingber. From time to time we’ll be bringing you some of her posts, covering everything from politics to fine dining. You can read more of the latter topic below.

If there is one thing you should do this weekend, it’s brunch or dinner at The Heron in Narrowsburg, NY. I’ve frequented The Heron, a “community driven and locally sustainable restaurant” probably five times in the last two months and every time it is spot on. The menu ranges from comfort foods like mac and cheese and buttermilk biscuits to more sophisticated items like oysters with caviar and a delicious beet salad.

Our last visit was for my birthday dinner and we had a wonderful meal. To start we opted for oysters with caviar and their AMAZING chopped salad with romaine lettuce, ham, cheddar cheese, red onion, egg, blue cheese and a yogurt dressing.

We typically eat pretty healthy and I am 80% vegetarian (cue friends’ laughter), but we decided to have an “off night” and ordered the Hanger Steak with fries, local duck egg, pickled onions and garlic mayo and the Hot Ham & Swiss on rye with pickles and mayo for our mains. The fries were extremely crisp and the sandwich was so good I ate the second half cold the next day. Cory loved the combination of steak and duck egg and basically licked the plate clean.

Finally, for dessert we ordered the Banana Bomb. Seriously, one of the best desserts I’ve had. I ate it so fast I’m not even sure how to describe it, but I know it was filled with bananas, cream, nuts, chocolate and a little bit of salt on top. How can you go wrong?

While the food is out of this world, it would be wrong of me not to mention their creative cocktails. I enjoyed the Moscow Mule (shaved ice, crop organic vodka, fentimen’s ginger beer, lime zest) and the Heron Cherry Soda (stoli salted caramel, gus’ dry soda, cherry juice), but if those aren’t your fancy, they have a full stocked bar and a bartender to whip up whatever is on your mind.

Not only are the food and drinks incredible and locally sourced (a lot of it), the atmosphere is super inviting and comfortable. If it is nice out call all ahead to reserve a spot on their porch. The Heron, 40 Main Street, Narrowsburg, NY; 845.252.3333. Hopefully I will see you there this weekend!

UPDATE: Since writing this post, we’ve visited again and enjoyed a few dishes that were equally as amazing…
