11 Jane St. Takes Flight with Inaugural Exhibition by Millicent Young
Kandy Harris | March 25, 2019“When There Were Birds (part i)” will be the first exhibit at the Saugerties, NY-based installation art and performance space March 30 through April 28, 2019.
Saugerties village has long been known as a haven for creative types, art galleries, and artists’ studio tours. And, starting March 30, 11 Jane St., an art and performance venue housed within a 19th-century brick warehouse located right in the hub of the village center, will be the newest addition to the art scene with sculptor Millicent Young’s innovative installation.

Birds of a Different Feather
When There Were Birds (part i) features ten ceiling-hung sculptures constructed from grapevine and horse hair, presenting as dreamy, avian forms varying in dimensions up to 130 x 96 x 48 inches in size. The pieces offer motion, interacting among themselves, the movement of air, shadows, and the observer. Millicent Young will be presenting a second part to this exhibition in November 2019. The exhibition is co-curated by Jennifer Hicks of 11 Jane St. and Jen Dragon, Cross Contemporary Art.
Young’s work has been recognized by curators and directors from institutions including DIA, Hirshhorn, New Museum, Guggenheim Museum and Whitney Museum, as well as receiving a top award at the 2005 Biennale in Florence, Italy. Her most recent solo show, “Of This”, was at Cross Contemporary Art, Saugerties, New York. She also lives in the Hudson Valley.
When There Were Birds (part i) is sponsored by Jane St. and Cross Contemporary Art. Opens Saturday, March 30 and runs through Sunday April 28th, 2019. See the exhibition during gallery hours, which are Saturday and Sunday, 12-5pm, or by appointment by calling 845-399-9751.
Meanwhile, over at the JJ Newberry Building at 236 Main Street, Cross Contemporary and 11 Jane St. will be curating a sculpture exhibit as a part of International Sculpture Day 2019, with an opening reception on Saturday, March 30, 5-8pm. The exhibit runs through April 28.
