A 1970s Throwback Ranch in Sloatsburg: $879K

  |  August 21, 2024

Today, Upstater visits a Sloatsburg home that was built in the ’40s but is stuck in the ’70s. Love that look? You’ll love this. Not too much of a fan? Still, you should stick around and strap in: It’s a helluva ride.

The 1970s throwback ranch has Alpine vibes with an exterior of brown cedar alternating with white stucco. A three-bay garage is a half-story below the main level.

A stone-and-railroad-tie stoop leads to the vintage front door.

Inside are all the “Boogie Nights” feels, from textured plaster—on the ceiling, walls, and the center-stage fireplace—to acres of terra-cotta tile. The thick wooden furniture in the living room intensifies that vibe.

A custom-built library sits alongside one wall. See more in the virtual tour.

The dining room has a mix of floor-to-ceiling windows, grainy wood paneling, and O.G. wallpaper. A pass-through allows dish exchange between here and the kitchen…

…which is another 1970s experience altogether, from the sliver of “Harvest Gold”-hued Formica countertop to the deeply grained, dark-brown cabinets and wild tile backsplash behind the Chambers cooktop. Solid bones exist here, from the peaked ceiling to tall windows and the thick storage ledge along the top beams. The terra-cotta floor has a different pattern here.

Skylights punch through the ceiling. The center island has a dual-wood top and seating for three. Don’t miss the dual wall ovens; also, there’s a SubZero fridge.

This bathroom’s shiny metallic wallpaper complements the vintage yet mismatched fixtures. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

The primary bedroom has custom, built-in white oak cabinetry that, according to the listing, was inspired by architect Charles Gwathmey. The swaths of oak and the neutral wall-to-wall carpeting are surprisingly soothing. The mirrored headboard wall reflects a library wall opposite the bed.

This dressing room is a wake-you-up bright green, with lots of nooks, crannies, and drawers to stash your stuff. It’s conveniently located…

…next to this dazzlingly modern bathroom. A roomy, walk-in shower is tucked next to the shallow vanity.

A tub sits next to the toilet, which is next to a bidet. The light-toned tile wainscoting is topped with complementary mosaic tile.

This bedroom is large and has a pair of windows that brighten it up as much as its sunny-toned carpeting.

This bedroom also has wall-to-wall carpeting, as well as…

…a Jack-and-Jill bath with penny tile and throwback red-and-white laminate vanities.

Similar in decor to the previous bedroom, this one has a floating corner shelving unit.

The basement has brown penny tile on the floor and barrel-carved, plaster-and-rafter ceilings. That built-in bar with a stone footrest and plaster arches just resonates with 1970s vibes.

A home office is more sedate, with a large picture window and a library wall.

A “summer kitchen” lives in the basement, too. It’s got penny tile and a mix of wood cabinets.

More colorful tile makes up the floor and vanity top in the basement bath, which has a custom-built vanity and tub/shower.

The laundry room has plenty of room to fold clothing across from the washer and dryer, along with a deep work sink.

A Gunite inground pool hides underneath this cover.

The poolhouse/cabana has a 1950s peaked ceiling.

The listing doesn’t fully describe the cabana, but it certainly looks spacious from this birds-eye view.

The house measures 3,980 square feet and sits on nearly two acres, just off scenic Seven Lakes Drive adjacent to Harriman State Park. It’s under two miles to downtown Sloatsburg and fine dining at Valley Rock Inn.
