A Century-Old Sears Kit Home in Port Jervis: A fascinating surprise awaits in the kitchen.

Over the past few years, Upstater has extolled the virtues of Craftsman style, and the quirky story of Sears kit homes bought from a catalog and built onsite.

This house in Port Jervis is a century-old Sears kit home with a jaw-dropping surprise. The exterior is pristine, with a wide front porch sporting the tapered columns that are iconic to the Craftsman era. A dormer above the porch has an assortment of windows. The property backs up to a hill.

The porch has a sweeping view of the neighborhood.

Yes, the interior needs many updates: The carpeting is worn, and the walls and ceiling need repair. But wow…that woodwork on the door and trim.

The staircase, too, has original wood that just glows.

Among the vintage wallpaper and white appliances in the kitchen is a most welcome surprise: Original oak cabinetry along one wall. It’s almost hard to imagine that hundred-year-old hardware and cabinets could look THIS good.

Shield your eyes from the opposite wall, though. Circa-’70s Early American cabinets are topped with wood-look counters.

Want another glimpse of that wonderful O.G. woodwork? Of course.

The doors, glass doorknobs, and rich wood trim are ubiquitous throughout the house. Along with that comes a hefty helping of handy-person work like new carpeting (if the new owner so desires) and wallpaper removal.

A few cans of paint couldn’t hurt, either. The house has two bedrooms…

…and one bath. The vanity and tile here could be updated.

The same goes for the mismatched tub and shower walls. But check out the hardware on that door!

The house is on a third of an acre, but with the hill in the back, there’s not much of a backyard.

But there’s an interesting, stacked-stone wall, and….this. Whatever it may be. We’d make it a raised garden bed.

The yard seems to get a lot of shade, and needs some work. But with a listing price of $205,000, there’s room in the budget for it. But act quickly—we expect this won’t stay on the market for long.

It’s also just a mile to Main Street and a burger at Ben’s Fresh.
