A Colonial-Era Estate in Red Hook
Jane Anderson | June 12, 2025
Red Hook has its share of homes that have seen the aftermath of the Revolutionary War.
Today, in particular, Upstater is touring a Colonial-era estate in Red Hook that dates to 1790. It has a rich mix of original details and modern updates. The white siding/green shutters ethos is calming.
Hand-hewn beams criss-cross the ceiling in the living room, and that flooring just gleams. We are introduced to one of six fireplaces here.
Fireplace No. 2 is in this sitting room.
The dining room, of course, has an oversized cooking fireplace. It practically drips with elegance despite its age; the chandelier is timeless.
What a beautiful interpretation of a modern kitchen. A blue island houses a beverage cooler and myriad storage, while a peninsula holds a sink. Both of them—and the white cabinetry throughout—are topped with black countertops. The range is chef’s-quality, as is the Sub-Zero fridge.
And of course, there’s another fireplace, this one rustic stone, in the family room that’s on the other side of the peninsula.
A bright blue sunroom is a breath of fresh air.
Head upstairs to a richly wood-floored landing.
Another fireplace warms this heavily beamed bedroom.
The bathroom is smartly modern, with a stone-tile walk-in shower contrasting with O.G. details like that built-in closet with Early American hardware.
Yep, a brick fireplace is centered between oversized windows in this yellow-walled bedroom.
The house measures an impressive 4,176 square feet. A standing-seam metal roof is beautiful and will last a long time.
The guest cottage has four bedrooms and this surprisingly roomy kitchen.
It’s cozy, with a stairway nook.
This bedroom is tucked under the eaves.
There’s room for a freestanding tub in the bathroom.
Other outbuildings include a 7,500-square-foot barn that has 25-foot ceilings, hand-hewn beams, and an original milking station from a former dairy farm; it’s perfect for livestock, hobbyists, or artists seeking a studio space. The rest of the outbuildings are a chicken coop, workshop, and a four-car garage.
The property is just off the Taconic, and it’s about 15 minutes east of downtown Red Hook and aerobatics at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. the list price was just reduced by $200,000, to $1,499,000.
