A Converted Church in Coxsackie: $580K

  |  August 12, 2024

Coxsackie (it’s pronounced “Cooks-sacky”) lies on the banks of the Hudson River in Greene County, and is the focus of this week’s Upstater foray.

Today’s house is a former church on Ely Street, one of the more popular venues in the town. The facade keeps original details, save for a lime-green front door. The steeple is a brand-new replica of the original, with a cheeky iron sailboat weathervane.

Like most public-space “redo”s, the interior offers a nice, open-concept flair, and 22-foot-high ceilings.

The kitchen has maple flooring, white cabinets, and cherry countertops. That staircase is one of two, on either end of the main floor, each leading to a 20′ by 20′ loft.

Old-fashioned nickel-plated pendants dangle over the cherry-and-granite island.

Eames-esque chairs with hairpin legs surround a smoked-glass dining table.

Twin sets of glass French doors are topped with transoms in the living room. What’s that curvy structure in the foreground?

No, it’s not a Monty Python chain-mail sculpture (“Ni!”). It’s a modern fireplace.

We’re digging this built-in bookcase next to another staircase.

The lofts have planked, peaked ceilings.

There are two bedrooms up here.

And one full bath, with this dual-sink, floating vanity.

The tub/shower has a complete shower system.

Oof, those stairs look a bit steep.

A coupla more steps up top lead to a sweet bedstead.

Like most big-space renovations, there are plenty of opportunities for golden-light photo ops.

Plus, there are 700 square feet of back and side decks with river-view peeks.

The interior measures 1,700 square feet—it sits on a tenth of an acre, literally under a block from the center of Coxsackie and a tipple at Patrick Henry’s tavern.
