A Dutch Colonial in Piermont: George Washington (Maybe) Drank Here
Jane Anderson | October 6, 2025
This sandstone cottage may well be the oldest home in Piermont.
Bonus: According to the Piermont Historical Society, this c. 1731 Dutch Colonial in Piermont once served as a tavern that hosted George Washington. Even without that provenance, this house shines with a vintage patina from its traditional facade to its triple dormers. It’s not difficult to imagine someone conspiring against a king “way back when” in this domicile. The more things change…
…the more they (in this case, beautifully) stay the same. The interior is even more impressive. Hardwood flooring runs throughout the home, wide-plank boards that echo with history. The front door opens to a staircase that splits the living room from the kitchen.
Thick, dark beams run along the low ceiling, in a tone that matches an oversized fireplace. Rows of bookshelves beg to be filled on one side; the other side of the fireplace leaves room for a big window and a window seat that would welcome a sunbeam-loving cat.
The kitchen side of the main floor has an equally impressive fireplace. Just thinking of the Colonial-era meals that were prepared over that blaze makes our mouths water. Today, a four-burner gas range takes over cooking duties, and cabinets in an appropriately colored Colonial blue run around the kitchen, topped with butcher-block counters.
There’s room for a dinette next to the stairs…
…which is open to both sides of the room.
The house has two bedrooms and one bath. This is the larger of the two bedrooms. Tucked into the top floor, it has an angled ceiling and the same beautiful flooring that’s showcased on the main floor.
A pebbled-look tile floor highlights the bathroom, which is elegant in its simplicity: A slim, walnut-toned vanity is topped with marble. The mirror reflects the tub/shower.
The smaller bedroom (quite a bit smaller, from this view) next to the bathroom has a newer-looking hardwood floor.
Like other homes of its age, this cottage wiggles its toes right on the side of the road. It has a postage-stamp lot, but cleverly placed landscaping shields this brick-lined courtyard from the street.
Tallman State Park is a short wander from here. Grab a bite just a half-mile away at Confetti Ristorante & Vinoteca, or hike the old Erie Path just behind the cottage. The house is listed at $559,000.
