A Former General Store in Palisades: The Country Store is now a three-bedroom home.

New on the market: The c.1830 Palisades Country Store, now a three-bedroom, two-bath beauty of a home.

George Lawrence operated a general store from here for decades after it was built. Details from that era abound here. For now, let’s enjoy the sweet front porch with gingerbread trim and those multi-paned windows (which are leaded and stained glass).

An O.G. gaslight lamp remains, too.

This is the great room when it was furnished.

Yes, those stained-glass windows are gorgeous. And the pine-board flooring glows, along with those rustic support beams.

We love that big hutch and the potbelly stove!

Oh wow….We bet the only reason THIS cast-iron stove remains here is because it was too dang heavy to move.

So…among its other iterations, the General Store has also been a grocery, tavern, printing press, grain and feed store, butcher shop, ice cream parlor, and a part-time post office before the tiny one opened across the street.

The kitchen is a delightful mix of vintage (built-in shelves) and modern (cabinetry, lighting, and appliances).

Drooling over this blank slate of beauty.

And the past *smacks* us in the face, in the form of more luscious stained glass on some upper cabinets. And don’t think that hardy gas stove escaped our scrutiny.

In the ’90s, an addition was built that added this skylit space and other rooms. The stone-tiled floor gets a lot of use, for sure.

The room is full of French doors and windows, plus a spindly and cute gas stove.

The house is modern where it matters, like here in the bathroom. Easy-maintenance hexi tile on the floors, a handy set of washer/dryer, and a corner glassed shower are necessities, in our opinion.

And oh, that golden light. Edward Hopper was on to something when he chose to capture that Rockland County ambiance.

The second bathroom has character in the mosaic-patterned floor tile and a wide, vintage tub. We love the size of this room, the marble-topped vanity, and the promise of a perfect shower.

Those French doors in the addition give way to plentiful petite garden areas…

…plus a koi pond.

The house is surrounded by homes with provenance that’s often spoken about in hushed tones, and we’re not kidding. Stars—both Hollywood and literary—have called Palisades home. The Rockland County hamlet lay just a half-hour from Manhattan, and is a hop, skip, and jump from the Palisades Parkway. It’s close to the New Jersey border, and not far from tons of elite dining. But if you’re in the mood for a comforting burger or pizza, the Mountain House has been around for generations and is just two miles away. The exterior of the home has been somewhat whitewashed; check out the listing for images of it in its subtly colorful heyday.

*Sigh* We wish we could linger here. If you do, too, find out more about 696 Oak Tree Road, Palisades, from Richard Ellis with Ellis Sotheby’s International Realty.
