A Historic Cragsmoor Home: Designed by a founder of the original arts colony.
Jane Anderson | June 3, 2025
The Ulster County hamlet of Cragsmoor was founded in the late 1800s as an arts colony. Today’s house pick was designed by one of the founders.
Frederick S. Dellenbaugh, a painter, explorer, and writer, designed this Arts & Crafts-style shingled home in 1907; it currently resides on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s beautiful, with white first-floor columns supporting cedar-shingled second and third stories.
The interior is as charming as the exterior. Simple yet elegant, the living room has a wood floor; a big window with a cushioned window seat; and a brick fireplace with an iron, woodburning stove.
The dining area, with a burnt-orange accent wall, is just beyond the sofa.
Here’s a view for context.
A skylight streams sunlight through the cathedral ceiling into the bright kitchen. A big granite-covered island provides seating and prep space. The white cabinets have simple drawer pulls and have white counters that match a wide farm sink.
The house has two baths. This one has a mix of white wainscoting, green walls, and beige/brown tiles.
Slim ceiling beams add interest to this bedroom.
The bed is oriented 90 degrees differently than the bed in the previous bedroom, according to the direction of these ceiling beams.
Soothing, deep green walls cozy up this bedroom.
Twin beds make their home in this gray-walled bedroom.
Dark wainscoting is striking in this bathroom, which also has a freestanding tub.
This playroom is perfect for kiddos.
And the fun continues on the top floor, bright with sunlight on beautifully worn wooden floors.
A stone patio has dramatic archways.
The property’s four acres include this fun treehouse.
A couple of outbuildings supplement the main house’s 2,100 square feet.
This home is about a mile and a half from the Sam’s Point Preserve trailhead, but don’t think that’s the only place to visit here. There’s also the grounds of the Cragsmoor Stone Church, for beautiful Shawangunk Ridge vistas, and the Cragsmoor free Library, which is beautiful inside and out.
And yes, the home itself is really on the National Register. Listing price is $879,000.
