A Manor in Middletown: History plus location equals a must-see.

The Route 211 corridor of Middletown/town of Wallkill, Orange County, is a shopper’s paradise. But just off the main drag, you’ll find this c. 1791 manor.
Jacob Mills was an early settler of the area—so early, in fact, that the area in which he settled between Scotchtown and Bullville is named after him: Millsburgh.
His home is a traditional stone house of the times, measuring an impressive 4,184 square feet with six bedrooms. The exterior carries Dutch sandstone details.

The ceilings are surprisingly high here. The foyer is bright and roomy, with an elegant staircase in brown, white, and green. It’s open to the living room, which shares a rich hardwood floor.

Green walls complement white trim throughout the room.

Of course, an oversized fireplace anchors the room.

French doors swing from a blue-and-white family room into a hall with another set of stairs, elegantly stenciled.

Hexagonal, teal tiles form the flooring in the kitchen. Shaker-style cabinets are oak, with quartz counters and stainless-steel appliances.

The same floor tile appears in the main-floor bath, which has a tub/shower and white-tiled wainscoting.

The dining room has shiny-yet-neutral wallpaper above white wainscoting, with big windows overlooking an enclosed porch.

An office is sunny yellow, with black-and-white-checked drapery.

The enclosed porch has a stone floor that matches a stone wall.

Stenciling near the ceiling rims this bedroom.

A modern bathroom is welcome amid all the traditional details. The double sinks are undermounted in the granite-topped vanity; an oversized, walk-in shower has glass doors and textured white subway tile.

Mossy green wallpaper has subtle stripes in this soothing bedroom.

And the traditional details in this bedroom would wow an antique-lover.

A smaller bedroom has blue walls and a twin bed.

The built-in shelving in this bedroom has plenty of space for souvenirs, tchotchkes, and knick-knacks.

Among the modern additions is an inground pool.

We bet this stone structure was a smokehouse, or something like that, at one time.

The house is on 3.7 acres, just a couple miles from the Route 211 shopping mecca. Enjoy a hearty meal at Cosimo’s Brick Oven, just three miles away.
