A Modern Interpretation of a Colonial Beauty: $4.5M
Jane Anderson | March 22, 2024The stone houses of Stone Ridge, in Ulster County, are iconic to the area. Today’s Upstater pick is no exception, but it comes with a surprise: It was built in 2002.
The exterior has all the hallmarks of other, c.1700s Dutch stone homes in its neighborhood—deep-silled windows, thick-grouted stone walls, saltbox-style roofs, and cedar trim. Designed after the Jean Hasbrouck House in Huguenot village (New Paltz), this modern interpretation of a Colonial beauty was built with stone from the local quarry and wood milled from oak, pine, and cherry trees harvested right from the property.
The “George Washington slept here” vibe continues inside with beamed ceilings and a plethora of fireplaces and built-ins. The living room, for example, has all three.

The family room has a beamed ceiling, stone fireplace, and cherry flooring.

An iron chandelier brings more Colonial character to the dining room. We love those wide-board floors.

The kitchen is large and blessedly modern. Sturdy cabinets march along one wall and surround the center island. All are topped with granite.

Chef-quality, stainless-steel appliances finish the look. They include twin convection/microwaves ingeniously tucked into the range hood; a double-size gas range and grill; twin wall ovens; and a French-door fridge. Glass-fronted, built-in cupboards add even more storage.

This double stairway is nothing short of magnificent.

The house has seven bedrooms, each with an ensuite bath. This room is tucked within the upstairs dormers, and has a vaulted, beamed ceiling.

The bathroom is simple, with an oak tub surround that mimics the vanity.

More ceiling beams appear in this bedroom.

Its bath has a marble tub surround and marble flooring.

This room has what looks like a standalone tub against one wall. Besides that quirky touch, the rest of the room has details like ceiling beams, deep window dormers, and a cherry floor.

A vaulted ceiling highlights this bedroom, which also has built-in cupboards.

The vintage vibe of that bedroom contrasts with the modern flair of this bath, which has a glass shower.

The rest of the bedrooms follow the same ethos as the others.

They’re all beautiful.

We like the wood ceiling in this room.

A window is tucked into the tippy-top of the wall in this bedroom.

With more than 9,500 square feet of interior space, the house can entertain a crowd. This gaming/TV space upstairs has a cozy nook and plenty of room for a mean game of poker beneath the skylights.

A recreation room and den on the lower level has a built-in bar and lots of mood lighting.

A floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace ups the cozy factor.

A home gym has tons of floor space, mirrors to check your form…

…and a bathroom with a separate shower room.

Twin pillars mark the start of the driveway leading to the 70-acre property. Get your Zen on at Stone Ridge Healing Arts, less than a mile down the road. A half-mile further gets you to an elegant dinner at Butterfield’s on the grounds of Hasbrouck House.
