A Newburgh Grande Dame on Grand Street
Jane Anderson | September 16, 2025
Upstater doesn’t often feature multi-family properties, but this Newburgh grande dame is, well, grand.
It is on Grand Street, to be exact. Built in 1836, it’s a pretty example of 19th-century architecture, in this case Greek Revival. An article published last year by Brownstoner gives all the finer details of this fine home.
The foyer has finely laid hardwood flooring and a swooping staircase with a curious niche at the top curve. Another Brownstoner article cues in with a legendary meaning for those types of niches.
(Hint, but macabre)
Anyway….
How beautiful is this patinaed floor and the stairwell’s woodwork?
A black marble fireplace is the showpiece of this room, which also happens to have original trim, oversized windows, and wonderfully worn wooden flooring. Not to mention high ceilings, to boot. According to Brownstone, the home was at one time the rectory for St. George’s Episcopal Church.
(*Swoon*)
Eight-over-eight windows swallow sunlight in this slim sunroom.
The dining room features another dramatically black marble fireplace; the room is simply elegant enough to handle any era of design, so the new owner need not feel owned by the Gothic ethos.
They could devote their time to embracing—or *cough, cough* changing—the decor in this kitchen. The butcher-block counters? On point. The sculptural sink and faucet? Classic. Personally, we’d reconsider the green cabinetry and black appliances. But then again, that’s just us. You do you. But doing anything to those floors? We wouldn’t.
Paneled, painted walls surround a fancifully inscripted pedestal sink in this bath.
The staircase is a swooping beauty throughout all the floors. One living space is a three-story triplex, while the one-bedroom garden apartment takes up the lower floor.
There are a total of four baths in the home. We love the marble vanity and the clawfoot slipper tub, along with the Fireclay green tile, in this bathroom.
A chandelier holds court above the bed, which sits atop honey-toned hardwood flooring, in this bedroom.
The marble fireplace here is streaked white/gray. How bright and beautiful is this room?
A Gothic light fixture sets the tone in this otherwise sunny bedroom.
Double doors in a light teal tone swing open to an equally colored room.
Solidity is the keyword in this bedroom, which features a wooden mantelpiece in front of a brick fireplace. Paneling shows up under the windows and a built-in corner hutch, as well as in a door. Industrial-style piping is painted white at ceiling height.
A more-modern kitchen is featured in the garden apartment, which also sports bleached-pine laminate flooring and stainless-steel appliances. Granite counters sit on white cabinets.
This image of the rear of the home has Hopper-esque lighting. A screened back porch has thankfully little structure to block the verdant view.
The home is 3,576 square feet on a half-acre. It’s about a half-mile from Newburgh’s waterfront and a tasty sip and meal at Blu Pointe. It’s listed for $799,000.
