A Renovated Farmhouse in Pine Bush

This big beauty of a farmhouse was built in the 1700s, believe it or not; it has been beautifully preserved and updated.

The hamlet of Pine Bush straddles Orange and Ulster counties; this home is on the Orange County side, in the town of Crawford. The exterior is traditional and elegant, with stone pillars supporting the columns of the full-width, covered front porch.

Get ready for gorgeous, vintage woodwork: This home has it in spades, starting with the simple yet pretty center-hall staircase.

Luckily, previous owners maintained the original wood trim (we’re betting it’s chestnut) and didn’t paint it over.

Too bad this fireplace was boarded up; perhaps the new owner could find a way to restore it.

Rich, varnished floors and wainscoting mirror the paneled doors in this room that flows into a tiled kitchen. And that ceiling? Unlike a lot of what we’ve seen before.

The beams have carved tin decoration, and the ceiling is decorated, too.

The house has five bedrooms, one of which is on the main level.

The rest of them are upstairs.

Wall-to-wall carpeting is soft underfoot in this tidy bedroom.

Same goes for this smaller room, which has amazing detail on the window and door trim.

We dig rustic ceiling beams, and the primary bedroom’s got it, along with painted-tin walls…

…a walk-in closet, and an ensuite bath.

It’s basic, but consider this a blank slate.

Another bath is at the top of the stairs.

The listing says the house has 1.5 baths, but we’d wager there are two full baths and this half-bath.

The whole she-bang sits on under a half-acre, close to the street—but that’s the chance you take with very old homes, in our experience. It’s a very pretty corner of the universe here, and you’re close to the Shawangunk Ridge for great hiking and wineries. It’s under a half-hour from here to New Paltz, and you can grab great wine and killer cliff views at Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery, about 20 minutes away.
