Yesterday, we featured a family-friendly log cabin close to all the big slopes. Today, however, we’re interested in a more intimate getaway, and we think this might be just the place for it. The Zen Cottage, located in Phoenicia hamlet, is also close to the slopes. Phoenicia is actually home to New York’s very first ski slope, the Simpson Memorial Ski Slope (operational 1935-1979), situated on a piece of land owned by the Simpson family on Romer Mountain. Although the Simpson slope is gone, Phoenicia still serves as a base of operations for skiers/snowboarders testing the snow at Belleayre, Hunter, Windham, and Plattekill.

But let’s be realistic. You want to stay here during the summer, too. It sits on the Esopus Creek, right in the heart of tubbing country, not to mention a ton of local swimming holes. So, check it out this winter. Go skiing, but mostly, hang out inside. Watch the snow fall on the trees. Make something yummy and warm in the kitchen. Then, come back in the summer. Spend your evenings on the porch or sitting at the fire pit. Spend your days swimming, biking, or hiking. Either way, sounds like the perfect romantic (and affordable! At $100/weeknights and a still-decent $115/night on weekends) mini-vacation away from it all.

The Zen Cottage’s owners offer other rentals in Phoenicia, which are also on AirBnB. Two-night min. stay, three-night min. on holidays. Located approx. 2 hours from NYC.
