A Shandaken Fixer-Upper Farmhouse

Happy Friday! Upstater is at a fixer-upper in Shandaken, Ulster County.

This view of the house looks great—cream-colored siding, accented with green trim and a green metal roof.

This view of the house looks like it needs a good scrubbing. But we love the farmhouse feel of it.

The kitchen is a great size, with white cabinetry. The counters are peeling, and the appliances are outdated, as is the flooring. The yellow walls are cheerful, though.

There’s a laundry room with lots of shelving (more can be seen in the listing).

The flooring in this room indicates that a rug must have once held center stage at one time. Did they paint/stain around it?

The dining room has a rumpled carpet that we’d toss. But the corner china cabinet is a keeper.

…that leads to a sparsely decorated second floor.

Ah, there’s another centered rug in this bedroom. The closet is lined with cedar, too.

The eyebrow windows are in good condition, but the floor needs work in this bedroom.

Normally we would push to hang onto a classic pink-and-white bathroom, but the tilework may be too far gone. We would try to keep that classic tub, if possible, if only because we bet it is super-heavy.

The property totals almost a half-acre and includes a low-slung outbuilding and a two-story barn. If town regulations permit, we imagine goats and chickens would feel at home here, too. Those mountain views are mighty fine.

The stone-lined streambed looks so intentional that we wonder if it was a mill run at one time.

It’s located on Route 28, between the intersection with Route 42 and the hamlet of Phoenicia. A good steak can be had four miles southeast, at The Phoenician Steakhouse. The house is listed for $169,000.
