A Steel-and-Glass Home in Milan: a Philip-Johnson-inspired beauty.

  |  April 9, 2025

Upstater is visiting a stunning steel-and-glass home in the Dutchess County town of Milan.

Inspired by the Glass House by Philip Johnson—who also designed another recent Upstater find—this contemporary retreat has one bedroom and two baths on three-plus acres. The main floor is encased in floor-to-ceiling windows, embracing the beauty of its wooded setting.

Indeed, Nature provides the gallery of “artwork” on its walls. White-painted flooring contrasts with the black steel walls.

A black, wood-burning Morso stove holds court on one end of the main floor that encompasses a living area and dining area.

An opaque wall does allow for some art display.

Sleek, striking black cabinetry highlights the kitchen. A light wood plank serves as a breakfast bar.

High-end finishes include an artisanal Moroccan tile backsplash and state-of-the-art appliances including a PITT built-in countertop range and Smeg oven.

Midcentury Modern designer sconces illuminate the floating vanity and Vigo vessel sink in the main-floor bath.

Black hexagonal tile covers the floor and one wall in the bathroom, which is designed as a “wet” bathroom with a copper hand shower.

Head up the stairs to the primary suite, where you’re first greeted by a sunny sitting room.

Watered-green, hexagonal tile forms an accent wall in the primary ensuite bath. A wooden floating vanity is superseded by a wide trough sink.

A deep, soaking tub commands the rest of the room.

The primary bedroom has floor-to-ceiling glass sliders that open to a private deck that’s actually the roof over more than half of the main level.

An office doubles as a guest room with room for two bunks.

A saltwater plunge pool tucks into the yard to soothe sweltering days. The 1,200-square-foot home is in a rural section of Dutchess County; still, it’s under two miles to the Taconic State Parkway, and about 15 minutes to downtown Red Hook.

A firepit awaits…

…as does this treehouse/guesthouse. All of this is under a million bucks, priced at $960,000.
