A Stone Chateau in Columbia County: $589.7K

  |  December 23, 2024

Ok, despite what we said last week, there’s not much that’s soft and cuddly about wintertime. So this week, Upstater focuses on stone-cold exteriors.

Today, we are in the Columbia County hamlet of Malden Bridge, at a fairy-castle-like stone home with an accompanying log cabin.

The “castle keep” (foyer) is impressive, from the chandelier in its peak down to the stone floor.

Slim French doors part to make way into the living room, whose floor is also clad in stone.

High peaks and heavy rafters highlight this great room.

Contrasting all that heaviness are floor-to-ceiling panes of stained glass.

The kitchen, too, samples both the stone and the stained glass…

…along with hefty helpings of shiny hardwood flooring and equally shiny granite counters. A gas cooktop and cabinet-mounted oven are stainless steel, as are the fridge and a dishwasher.

A chandelier centers the ceiling in this rounded half-bath on the main floor. We’d find every excuse to waste time in this wood-clad realm. We’re digging the detail in the radiated ceiling treatment.

Well, hey there—it’s that webbed ceiling again, repeated this time in three-dimensional form. This bedroom sports not only that, but a rustic wood floor and a stained-glass window, to boot. Oh, you can’t quite make it out?

Here it is. Whoa.

This bathroom is surprisingly neutral. The pickled-wood-look floor has its tone mimicked in the pale tile surrounding the tub/shower. The new owner may want to update this look.

Aaaannndd….we’re back. Splashy stained glass is the perfect backdrop for a Victorian settee in this wood-shiplap-walled room.

A sculpture garden/fountain decorates the yard. But wait, there’s more.

This log guest house measures 1,300 square feet and has two bedrooms, two full baths, and a kitchen with butcher-block counters.

The living room has a stone fireplace and a wood-look floor.

All of this—the copper-turreted chateau, the log guest house, everything—sits on 6.2 acres. It’s all within a half-hour of the cities of Hudson and Albany; the same drivetime will take you to the Berkshires, too.
