A Stone House on Five Acres: This home awaits your magic touch.

We didn’t plan on this being old-home week…and the week’s still young, so that may change.
But today, we’re at a stone house in Kingston/Stone Ridge/Marbletown that dates to 1694! Reminiscent of the structures in the Stockade District, this peaked-roof four-bedroom has the mossy stone walls that charm antique buffs. And it’s got a collection of red barns, to boot.

Concrete slab steps are a bit askew on the way to the low front porch.

The interior has a worn but soothing glow from the stone and wooden walls and hardwood floor. A big, freestanding, wood-burning stove supplements the heat in the winter.

Trying to discern between the beams and the tongue-and-groove on the ceiling is a bit like an M.C. Escher print.

If we owned this home, we’d lean in to the ethos of the ancient stone and wood, trying to retain as much O.G. mood as possible.

That didn’t happen in the kitchen, which is awash in blue-painted cabinets and trim and blue-dotted vinyl tile. But we could imagine a beautiful renovation with more neutral tones.

Now this is what we came for. Deep-toned wood flooring and the textured stone walls are a warm esthetic.

Aaaand, we’re back to the ’70s again, with green shag carpeting and walls that have seen better days. This first-floor bedroom is right off the living room.

That vintage pendant lamp can be pulled down or up, thanks to a hidden pulley mechanism.

We’re unsure what’s going on with the walls; we’re thinking it may be old plaster. The house is being sold as-is, cash only, with no contingencies. Still, the roof is only 20 years old, and the well pressure tank and hot-water heater are both new.

This upstairs bedroom is in much better condition.

This room, bigger and with a coat of green paint, needs some repairs but is also not terrible.

To be honest, the vintage-lover in us would do all we could to preserve that floor and repair those walls. They must have been a special part of a happy little boy’s bedroom at one time.

The house also has one bathroom, but it’s not shown in the listing. Interior space measures 1,700 square feet. More space can also be had in these red barn outbuildings, and the property totals five acres plus a separate 1.48-acre parcel. All of this, for a price tag of $420,000.
It’s between Marbletown and Stone Ridge, although it has a Kingston address. It’s about a mile away from breakfast at The Roost.
