A Storybook Stone Cottage in Shokan: $499.9K

  |  December 24, 2024

Today, Upstater visits a storybook stone cottage in Shokan.

It’s got one bedroom and 1.5 baths on two parcels totaling five acres. A bluestone path wends its way around the house to the stoop.

The home was built in 1946, and a lot of O.G. elements remain—like this Midcentury Modern front door, and lots of wood paneling.

The paneling extends to the ceiling in this room. The listing says wood flooring is believed to exist underneath the carpeting.

A built-in wall of wooden shelves surrounds a fireplace in this den, and a big picture window pours sunlight in. With some sprucing up, and new flooring, this room would be spectacular.

We’re actually kinda partial to this vintage wallpaper.

The kitchen is large, with interesting cabinetry. The new owner will most likely use it as a blank slate for a renovation, in our opinion.

We hope they’d consider saving this sink and the fabulously vintage cupboard on which it sits. In this image, you can also see the well-kept window trim, replete with brass handles on the sashes.

A stone-and-wood sunroom is a big plus.

The sole bedroom has wall-to-wall carpeting and a ceiling fan.

Glass doorknobs are on the closet doors.

Vintage, pink fixtures in the bathroom make us want to retile the walls in black and pink to restore the O.G. look.

A half-bath has marbleized walls and a stacked washer/dryer.

The upstairs is super-cute. Shiplap walls, built-in shelves…even that linoleum has interesting Midcentury vibes.

There’s a lotta room up here.

The picturesque property includes a four-car garage.

It’s got lots of space inside…

…and even more on the second floor.

Five acres gives privacy, but Route 28 is only about a block away. And it’s a smidge over a mile to Fruition Chocolate Works. Of course, the Ashokan Reservoir is nearly spitting distance from here, too.
