A Vintage Family Camp in Saugerties: The c.1804 Snyder estate has its share of surprises.

This week, Upstater is in the Ulster County town of Saugerties. Skirting the banks of the Hudson River, Saugerties has both woodsy enclaves and a welcome downtown.
Today’s house calls the woods home, but it’s just 10 minutes south of downtown Saugerties. You could call it a family camp, with a main house dating to 1804 and a surprise to be revealed. The stone exterior, and low-ceilinged interior, almost makes it look a half-century or so older.

See? We’re getting Colonial vibes here, from the ceiling beams to the oversized fireplace. The house needs work: We’d start by removing that ’80s-era carpeting.

The staircase is predictably skinny and steep in the hallway.

And the kitchen needs quite a bit of sprucing up. Stainless-steel appliances are a nice touch, and we bet there’s storage behind those Early American-hinged doors. One thing we absolutely would not change, though…

…is this freestanding farmhouse sink.

A laundry room fills the space between the kitchen…

…and a shed-roofed sunporch.

Here’s the sunroom from the outside. The cobalt-blue siding and red-painted deck are anachronistic to the stone facade, but the right owner might love them.

Here’s a side view of how the sunroom fits against the house. Oh, hey, what’s that other building?

It’s a seasonal guest house, with four bedrooms, a living room, dining area, bathrooms, and another full kitchen. Alas, there are no images of the interior. But those covered terraces are perfect for catching a late-summer breeze.

The building is officially named “Water Hall,” but it’s got this vintage sign on the side of it. There’s not much available on the interwebs about Camp Wahkonda, but it would be fun for the new owner to research it.

The main house’s classic Dutch lines are worth preserving.

Imagine a warm, starry evening here, with fireflies competing with the campfire for the kiddos’ attention.

The property’s 3.9 acres back up to the Plattekill Creek, too.
A trip downtown, like we mentioned, is a 10-minute drive. Make a pitstop for coffee and a book at Inquiring Mind Bookstore & Cafe.
