An Artsy Cottage in Garrison: $789K
Jane Anderson | December 19, 2023
Garrison is a lovely little Hudson River hamlet in Putnam County, and it’s the site of today’s former schoolhouse.
Compared with other local schools in the Hudson Valley, this one’s a newbie: It was built in 1950. It’s set against a hill amid lush gardens, with a divided set of front steps leading to a covered front porch with two front doors.
The porch is the best place for chilling. We love the variety of railings here, too.
The door to the right opens to a small foyer with a curvy set of stairs.
Beyond the foyer, the living room opens up…
… and flows into a dining room (you get a peek at the kitchen, but we’ll visit that in a little while)…
…and the space continues to flow into a family room. A floor-to-ceiling bookcase invites perusal. The floor is painted wood, in a tan shade that complements the walls.
The other front door opens to a sitting room/home office.
The kitchen is modern and sleek, but its ceiling and floor are not.
A wall of floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors soak the kitchen in sunshine. White cabinets are topped with butcher-block counters, and the stainless-steel appliances are up-to-date.
According to the listing, the house has three bedrooms, including a first-floor bedroom. But it only describes this one: the primary bedroom, situated on the second floor. It’s got a peaked ceiling criss-crossed with white beams, a distressed-look, white-painted floor, and a walk-in closet.
A door from the primary bedroom opens to this sitting room, which has its own closet so it could serve as a bedroom.
The bathroom has a distressed-wood floor and aqua walls that match the tile in the large walk-in shower. White subway tile forms a handy bench inside the shower stall, with lights embedded in it.
This deck is off the kitchen, and gives off treehouse feels.
The house is on three-quarters of an acre and has a saltwater, inground pool, too. Its location couldn’t be better: It’s beautifully set in the Hudson Highlands, just a mile from the Metro-North station in Garrison. Choose the Bird & Bottle Inn, just a seven-minute drive away, as your go-to dining choice.
