An Italian Ski Chalet Replica in Livingston Manor
Jane Anderson | September 15, 2025
The original owners of this boldly designed home in Livingston Manor were inspired by the ski region of St. Martino, Italy.
They commissioned this Italian-ski-chalet-replica in 1967 after discovering the design in a 1960s magazine. Its iconic lines remain, down to its stone walls and wood-planked interior.
A climbing hydrangea has hugged these walls dramatically for who knows how long.
There’s stone on the interior, too, in an accent wall and in a thick, rustic fireplace in the living room. The ceiling climbs to an asymmetrical peak, with gable-side windows that match the light pouring in from clerestory windows at the side roofline.
The house is a work of art: Case in point, the wood-lathe “grate” adjacent to a staircase next to the living room.
Didja notice that interesting coffee table? It happens to have been cut from a tree on-site. It, along with some choice other furnishings, are negotiable with the house sale.
The thing about cedar wood is that it catches the golden morning and afternoon light, casting its glow throughout the house.
Two single beds occupy this bedroom, which would seem dark were it not for those gorgeous triangular windows that beg for a line of colorful glass bottles on display.
The second-floor hall is roomy enough for a lengthy desk worthy of so much more than mere bill-paying.
Oh, and there’s a cool catwalk, too.
This bedroom is larger than the last, but shares the same window ethos. We’re unsure what’s happening on that bed, but our knee-jerk reaction would be to advise one to leave the bed before making it.
Even the bathroom sports that dramatic, high-peaked, wooden-plank ceiling. A black-and-white checkerboard floor brightens the look. The cabinetry is handcrafted.
This banquette/breakfast nook in the kitchen cozies up along a locally sourced stone wall, beneath a bevy of basketry.
The kitchen is rather rustic, with handcrafted cabinets and Formica counters rimmed with chrome—they’re such a moment trapped in time that it would almost be a shame to replace them all.
A mix of vertical and horizontal cedar boards encase this bedroom.
The listing has more details on the home, but here’s a shot of the inspo behind all of this.
The 15-acre property includes this Dutch-inspired barn…
…and a fruitful orchard.
A gorgeous mountain view is a beautiful bonus.
All of this bucolic beauty is, of course, a bit removed from Manhattan (about an hour and 45 minutes). It’s about halfway between Route 52 and Route 17, so shopping and commuting are just a few miles away. For a 1,458-square-foot home on 15 acres, $445,000 is a good value.
