An Old-World-Style Ellenville Home

Sometimes, Upstater is surprised by what we find here in the Hudson Valley.
Case in point: This Old-World-style Ellenville home, at first glance, looks like it harks from the 1800s or earlier. But it was built in 1950. Still, the stone details on the exterior are elegant, as is the fishscale siding on the upper part of the attached two-car garage.
Wowza—totally did not expect a Sunset Boulevard-worthy staircase, and yet here it is, complete with a coffin corner. A lot of polishing and refinishing is in order, but we love the chunky front door and its delicate sidelights and transom, too.
The hardwood flooring in the living room is in dire need of repair, as do some of the window panes in the door that leads outside. But gosh, how perfect is that fireplace wall, from the built-in bookcases and window seats around each window to the stately fireplace flanked by additional cupboards?
Look closely at the large window next to the dining table (lifted by bed risers), and you’ll see illustrated tiles surrounding it. We also kinda love that copper hood over the electric range.
The kitchen has a fairly modern layout, but we’re sure the new owner will want to install new cabinetry and countertops.
The half bath has yellow tile walls and a brown tile floor, with a pedestal sink.
This home has all the fittings for a big family, like this large dining room.
Blue cabinets and bookshelves cover the perimeter of this home office. The flooring does need some love.
So does the laundry room, though we appreciate the vintage look of that sink cabinet.
That swooping staircase is gorgeous right up to its ending at the second floor.
Two surprisingly modern standalone vanities/sinks hold court in this bathroom, which has gray walls and white wainscoting.
The primary bedroom is large and in charge, with its own fireplace surrounded by Delft tiles.
This modern bathroom has a glass shower and mosaic tiles within the shower area.
The house has a total of six bedrooms, including this one with wall-to-wall carpeting.
Minus the messiness and the carpeting, this room can be doll-house pretty, with the scalloped window treatments and the lavender-blue walls, plus that clever, floor-to-ceiling, built-in bookcase headboard.
This sunny bedroom has potential, with its angled ceiling and a floor that begs to be rejuvenated.
Believe it or not, the lavender color of that sink and toilet is rare in the antique trades. As old-home buffs, we kind of like the tilework in this bathroom, too—though we admit the colors of the fixtures and the tiles are in no way copacetic.
Another bedroom has sunny windows and angled ceilings.
Navy blue walls highlight this bedroom.
The backyard has an above-ground pool.
And the Beerkill creek runs along the property. The 3,550-square-foot house sits on 0.78 of an acre. Another surprise is how close this property is to downtown Ellenville: It’s just down the block from Main Street. It’s a half-mile jaunt to Cohen’s Bakery on Center Street for a raisin pumpernickel loaf that slaps. Given the home’s size, along with its good location, the final surprise is its price: $339,000.
