An Updated, c.1934 Red Hook Home

  |  June 9, 2025

This updated c.1934 Red Hook home has pretty details that pay homage to its earlier years.

With a cedar-shingled, wraparound porch, and a gravel driveway, you’d almost expect John-Boy Walton to lope around the corner and crank up the ol’ Model T. But the house has been so nicely maintained and updated, there’s not too much that needs to be done to it.

We love the beadboard ceiling on the porch, and that solid front door.

It opens into the kitchen.

The cabinets are solid, and the Douglas fir flooring is gorgeous. Those countertops, though, have seen better days.

An antique dining table dominates the dining room, amid yellow walls and across from a fire-engine-red-painted fireplace. Given our druthers, we’d reconsider the paint choices and try to strip the fireplace paint.

The other side of it is natural, as seen in this cozy back room.

The stairs are simple and elegant, with a kid-protective net on the higher parts.

The ceiling in this room needs some attention, as does the floor. But it’s a good size.

The main-floor full bath also has a full laundry room, with a sunny window.

Head upstairs to the first of two bedrooms.

It’s open to the stairwell, fully carpeted, and painted mossy green. A skylight streams daylight into the room.

A second skylight brightens this cheery, yellow room that has the same beige, wall-to-wall carpeting.

What’s behind that curtain?

The second full bath, done up in blue-and-white tile with two pedestal sinks and a European wet-shower layout. We’re assuming there’s a toilet somewhere, too.

A small back patio leads to a gravel path and the lawn.

There’s plenty of room to park a crowd, along with a bright red garage/barn/studio that has electricity. The two acres of property are a mix of lawns and trees.

So, although this home has a Red Hook mailing address, it is technically not in Red Hook or even Dutchess County. It’s in the town of Gallatin, just over the border in Columbia County. It’s beautiful country, and the Taconic State Parkway is a skip away. And all of this is at a list price of $485,000.
