All Around Tivoli Week
Kandy Harris | December 8, 2014When it comes to Small Town USA charm, it doesn’t get much more Small Town-ier than Tivoli. The Dutchess County village consists of a main drag that encompasses Tivoli’s business and historic district. Keep following that main drag west and eventually, you’ll find yourself next to the railroad tracks, beholding the Hudson River. Quaint and quiet but getting chi-chi-er by the second (it’s hard to disregard next door neighbor Bard College’s affluence-influence on the surrounding area), Tivoli has a couple of solid eateries, such as Santa Fe for Mexican, Osaka for sushi, and Broadway Pizza for a slice. But the crown jewel of the village is Hotel Tivoli, a chic new inn housed in for the former Madalin Hotel (more on Hotel Tivoli here).
Tivoli’s across-the-river counterpoint is Saugerties, and the two share similarities: A walkable village vibe (although Tivoli is smaller) with homegrown businesses and access to the Hudson not far away. In spite of the resemblances between the two, we’ve often joked about how the east side of the Hudson has passenger rail while the west side has cargo. Or, that you have to pay a toll to cross the Kingston- Rhinebeck Bridge into Dutchess County, but it’s free to come back into Ulster. Or, that Ulster County has SUNY New Paltz, while Dutchess has Bard, one of the most expensive colleges in the country. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still find some reasonably-priced real estate finds in east-of-Hudson equestrian country. We found a few, and we’ll be featuring area properties throughout the week. Just brace yourself for the property taxes. If you prefer them lower, you’ll have to head across the river…to Ulster County.
Tivoli is located about 40 minutes north of Poughkeepsie and approximately 2 hours from NYC.
