You know you’ve been looking at a lot of old homes when you see one built in 1830* and think, “Too new.” Approaching the age of 200 is still plenty old enough for our purposes, especially since this Athens brick Colonial is such a palate cleanser. Most of the historic homes we’ve looked at this week have had lots of intricate details going on inside. Couple that with low ceiling beams that further cramp a room, along with lots of period furnishings, paintings, wall sconces, and various period doo-dads, and the walls can start to feel like they’re closing in. So when we saw this bright, spacious interior completely free of ceiling beams, we practically breathed a sigh of relief. The ceilings, they’re so high! And the arched doorways make them seem even higher! And there’s so much natural light! And so many fireplaces! Okay, that last one is sort of beside the point, but we do love us some fireplaces (even decommissioned ones). The plank flooring does yeoman’s work of grounding the airy interior, and in the kitchen, we are digging the marble countertops. Located in the Greene County village of Athens, the property doesn’t provide much land or privacy (it does have a quarter-acre yard with a garden), but what it lacks in spaciousness outside, it makes up for with 3000 square feet inside.

*We discovered a bit of a discrepancy with the home’s actual construction date. The listing says 1830. Other sources, however, puts its construction year around 1800. Either way, it’s an Old House to us. Any experts care to weigh in?
