Big Victorian in the Rural Retreat that is East Durham, $125,000
Kandy Harris | February 24, 2016We’re going to cut to the chase on this one: East Durham hamlet is a real gem in the Catskills, surrounded by all kinds of cool outdoor activities like a water park, swimming holes/outdoor pools, mountains to hike, golf, farm stands, skiing in the winter, and an Irish cultural center that hosts musical events and comes with its own historic thatch-roof Irish country cottage. You can even go play mini-golf and race go-karts if none of that other stuff appeals to you. It’s not hard to see why this part of Greene County once boasted summer vacation colonies by the dozen. Except it still hosts summer resorts. More quiet, less bustling, smaller resorts, perhaps, but we’re not complaining about that one bit.
East Durham is also home to this c.1890 Victorian with 5 beds/3 baths, 3360 square feet, and a half-acre of yard. It’s right near the center of East Durham, as a matter of fact, so the facade faces the main drag. The backyard is more private and comes with its own 1-bedroom guest cottage. That’s right. Now it’s a 5 bed/3 bath 3360 sq. ft. Victorian with a guest house priced below market value.
There’s a great virtual tour of the home’s interior that’s definitely worth the 2:22 it takes to watch it. Located 20 minutes northwest of Catskill village, which means it takes 20 minutes to get to the Thruway. We did refer to this as a “retreat,” no? Get good winter tires. East Durham is worth it.
